BLACKPINK’s Rosé Withdraws from KOMCA

BLACKPINK member Rosé has officially withdrawn from the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), making her the first major K-Pop artist to do so since Seo Taiji in 2003. This significant move highlights her growing international presence and the need for more efficient copyright management as she expands her career globally.

Reasons Behind Rosé’s Departure from KOMCA

Rosé submitted her request to terminate her contract with KOMCA on October 31, 2024, and after a three-month grace period, her contract was officially ended on January 31, 2025. The decision is believed to be motivated by the desire to streamline her copyright management, particularly as she focuses on her activities in the United States.

Transition to U.S. Copyright Management

With her exit from KOMCA, all of Rosé’s music copyrights will now be managed by Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group. This collaboration will involve partnerships with U.S. copyright organizations such as the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI). This shift is expected to enhance efficiency in managing her royalties and allow for quicker revenue distribution.

Implications for Rosé’s Career

The transition signifies a strategic move for Rosé as she aims to capitalize on her international success. Industry experts suggest that managing copyrights through U.S. publishers will not only simplify processes but also potentially increase her earnings from the lucrative American market. The revenue generated from the U.S. is estimated to be significantly higher than that from South Korea.

BLACKPINK’s Upcoming World Tour

As Rosé embarks on this new chapter in her career, BLACKPINK is set to kick off a world tour starting in July 2025. The tour will include performances across various countries, including Korea, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and several others. This global tour will further solidify Rosé’s status as an influential figure in the music industry.

A Groundbreaking Move for K-Pop

Rosé’s withdrawal from KOMCA marks a pivotal moment in K-Pop history, reflecting the changing landscape of music copyright management in an increasingly globalized industry. Her decision not only sets a precedent for future artists but also underscores the importance of adapting to international markets for sustained success.
